Penjikent (or Panjikent), a small town located on the lovely Zeravshan river in western Tajikistan served as one of the major stops on the Silk Road. Established as a major Sogidan city in the 5th Century, Penjikent was one of the socio-political, economical and cultural powerhouses of that powerful civilization and served as a home for palaces, temples, and markets. Though the city was destroyed by Arabs in the 8th Century, much of the remnants were only recently discovered. Tourists today can visit the ruins of houses and office buildings, the citadel and palace, and places of worship, all of which were found within the last 100 years just outside of the modern city. The ancient city includes a medieval citadel surrounded by dwelling and public buildings as well as a necropolis. Clay and wooden figures found during excavations are kept in the Rudaki History and Local Lore Museum. Main sightseeing: Ancient Settlement
